DPS Drafts

Double Page Spread Drafts (DPS)

This is one of my DPS drafts that i have done to the plan of what my final DPS may look like. On this DPS i have one of fellow friends from my college, this shot was taken whilst taking pictures in school to try out different poses and props. The artist quote is 'I'm Different' this illustrates that he is different towards others in the music industry. The heading is 'New Kid on the Block" & 'New Artist on the Block'. New Kid on the Block is name of the artists first song that had given him his recognition to where he is now & i also chose this so that his fellow fans reading this will automatically know what the writing is going to contain.

Music Magazine Article
When did you first start rapping?
“I first started rapping when I was in secondary school; it first started has a hobby but then my friends that were around me said I should turn my rapping skills into a profession because we would all be rapping as a joke during break-times and lunchtimes"
When did you start noticing that you had a buzz?
“I first realised that I had a buzz when I released my first music video called “New Kid on the Block”. People would come to me in school and out of school singing and rapping the chorus to me, at first I didn’t think anything of it but then I logged into my YouTube account and realised that I had got over 20,000 views for my first video, this was a very big accomplishment for my age group because people round my part of London were struggling to hit 5,000 YouTube views. But later down the line I started receiving YouTube comments asking for more videos and started gaining more subscribers. All of this brought me to where I currently am at the moment”
What gave you the name Black Ink.?
“Well I was recording in the school studio I couldn’t decide what my artist name would be but a teacher walked in when I was recording and I didn’t notice but after I finished recording the teacher had asked me what is your artist name and I had said that I haven’t got one, he then said to me that you will make an impact and a stain in the music scene so call yourself Black Ink.”
Who are your UK & US musical inspirations?
“I’d have to say my musical inspirations that kept me moving and wanting to succeed were Skepta & Meek Mill, the reason for this was because they both came from a place where they had struggled and thought nothing but to succeed in what they had selected to be their profession and are now currently big household names in the current music scene and have been for a while now.”
What kind of music do you listen to today?
“I’m currently listening to Krept & Konan’s new mixtape called “Young Kingz”, it is filled with mixed emotions and I truly respect them for the art that they are currently producing because it was meant to be a mixtape that I had put on trial to see if their fans would purchase but it then had hit the Top 20 UK iTunes chart & then had won a MOBO Award, but generally I am listening to the new Hip-Hop and RnB to give me an insight of what to put out next for my fans.”
Where would you most like to perform?
“That’s a very good question. I would like to perform at the Greenwich O2 and have sold out tickets, this would be an accomplishment to know that I have true fans flying in to come and watch me perform.”
Who would you most like to open for?
“I would like to most open for MMG or French Montana because before I became who I am today I always loved the movement that they were creating and always wanted to be a part of it.”

If you weren't rapping, what would you be doing?
“If I was rapping I would still be in education studying business studies and then be at uni studying Accounting and Finance to become an accountant because I am really good with numbers.”
Do you play any instruments?
“I really can’t play any instruments but I am trying to learn how to play piano so that I can do my own acoustic version of one of my most liked videos.”
Do you enjoy writing music and/or lyrics?
“I really enjoy writing lyrics for my own music because every time I write I picture myself in the instrumental so that I can get a feeling of what the tune is going to be about & also have a relationship with the tune.”

XXL DPS Analysis

MUSIC DPS ANALYSIS

Title: The title here is good things come to those who wait. The title is Black on a white background in order to help the title stand out on the page and entice the reader to the DPS article.
Layout: The layout for this page is very simple as with a lot of Hip-hop Magazines. As it has a big headline and small writing underneath with colour coding to show the conversation with a page of the Interviewee Dr Dre on the right.
Picture: The picture used here is of Dr Dre, he is a very popular and highly rated Rap artists in the music industry and has been going for almost three decades. Therefore he would be a big feature for XXL and that’s why they put him on the DPS of the magazine since readers would be very fascinated in stories such as this.
Colour Scheme: The colour scheme used by XXL is very simple, as it is Black on a white background. This is to make sure people are surprised by what is actually written rather the appearance of the magazine itself. This works well with the main picture as that is meant to be the attraction of the article since it is about Dr Dre himself.
How does it appeal to its audience: XXL magazine like Vibe has gone for a simple design for their DPS. This helps the reader to become instantly attracted to the article rather than having to work it out as readers of this genre would prefer. XXL has also featured a very popular artist in this Genre and therefore would attract not just its main target audience of 16-25 year-old but also the slightly older generation of 30-40 year olds. The last way XXL appeals to its target audience is by using a very informal approach and as most readers of this genre are generally informal it would appeal to them directly.

Title: The title for this DPS page is How High, which can be interpreted as marijuana as the picture on the left suggests or how high the artist Wiz Khalifa is in the music charts. The big WK above the title is simply for the initials of the artists and instantly tells the reader who they are going to read about.
Layout: The Layout on this page is very simple. With a picture on the left page and Writing on the right. This is done to help the reader instantly get the message as this type of audience would not wish to try and work it out, they would wish for a simple message which is exactly what the DPS has got.
Colour Scheme: The Colour scheme used on this DPS is white, black and Orange.  This has been used to highlight the important parts of the DPS such as the information under the title and the Sub-heading of each section.
Picture: The picture here is of the hip-hop artist Wiz Khalifa who is very popular in this type of genre. He is known for taking Marijuana and this picture of smoke coming out of his mouth suggests the idea that he is smoking Weed, which helps to get the message of the article across.
How does it appeal to the audience: This DPS appeals to the audience, firstly by using a simple message that readers will easily understand. The second way it appeals to the audience is by using a picture of a Wiz Khalifa with a not bothered look on his face which is how most of this audience feel towards smoking Marijuana. The final way in which this DPS appeals to its target audience is by featuring an article in which they care about and using a big bold font to present it so that the message really stands out to the readers.
