Music Magazine Evaluation Q1

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

  • Does your project look like a music magazine? Why?
I think my magazine looks like a music magazine because the front cover has names of big artists in the sell lines, it also has a button that says "FREE MIXTAPE INSIDE". Also the name of my music magazine is called "Music Across The Scene", which suggests and gives others an insight of what the magazine is about. Also, on the contents page it has a title illustrated as "the C-side". This gives the look of what is normally trending within the Rap & Hip-Hop industry when artists represent where they are from. In addition, in my DPS that i constructed the model and the mise-en-scene that was used within the photograph shows that the artist is from a rural area of where he was being brought up to show my target audience that he is a artist that grew up from a area that is hard to become what you want to become in that specific area. Finally,  the way that my model/artist is dressed is how a stereotypical artist will be dressed if he is representing the Hip-Hop/Rap genre.

  • What conventions have you used?
My music magazine includes conventions such as a Masthead - M.A.T.S (Music Across The Scene), Sell lines, Button, Colour Scheme, Barcode, Main Image, Issue Date & Cover Line.

  • Does it subvert conventions or conform to magazine conventions?
It does conform to magazine conventions because i used a VIBE magazine help to construct the conventions on my magazine to make sure that the conventions that had to be on my magazine where included on the magazine and to also insure that i was finalising my magazine to look like a music magazine.

This is the magazine that i used to construct my magazine cover to
make sure that all my conventions where correct ...

  • What analysis of existing professional products did you do?
I done a case study of XXL on my blog that shows the history of XXL has accomplished in the magazine industry and the artist/models that have been in their issues that they have released. Also, the first magazines that were released at August 1997 featuring Jay-Z & Master P.

  • Does your magazine clearly fit into the music genre or it unclear what genre it is?
Yes my magazine clearly fits into the music genre that i have selected my music magazine to be in because the colour themes that i have chosen which are Black, Red & White. In addition, the clothing that my models are wearing are similar to the existing Hip-Hop/Rap magazine that currently exist.

  • How have you used models as music artists?
I used my models in a correct form that i had planned before taking the photos. I had made my front cover magazine models wear a casual teenage boy living in local area, with the scenery of the car in the background. Also, for DPS i had made my artist wear all black with the leather sleeves on his jacket to give the more modern rapper look with the timberlands that are currently trending, to show that he has a sense of artist look and proper dressing as if he's going to perform. Finally, in my DPS i have used two models that are wearing suits with violent weapons within the picture to show that they can be serious but also have the underground attitude.

  • How have used photography, editing and miss en scene?
I placed the camera in a perfect position to take a picture that i thought would fit the Front Cover, Double Page Spread & Contents Page the best. I had picked the best editing that will fit the colour theme of the magazine because i didn't want any of the photos to be out of content of the pictures and the layout of my magazine. My layout design i had done research to see how i would like my layout to be constructed on each page and to make sure that it fits in the genre properly by following the conventions to finalise that everything was in the correct place.

Music Magazine Evaluation Q2

Final Magazine Cover

He is my finished front cover magazine for M.A.T.S. On this front cover i had decided to put a button on the magazine to attract more attention to our audience to purchase the magazine because it comes with a free mixtape that you can go download with the code underneath the sticker. I have also included the sell lines, stand first, issue date & number. In addition, i have made "The Return Of Paper Boyz" name stand out to show our audience that they are the models names that are on the magazine front cover, it makes it more attractive to the audiences eye. I also the VIBE magazine front cover as a guide to help me align where my sell lines, stand first etc. On where it should be placed on my magazine.

Final Contents Page

Here is my final contents page, i have used the term "the C - side", standing for the Contents side, I had taken the idea from the contents page below from a magazine named XXL. I found the layout very Hip-Hop because in Hip-Hop music they normally tend to talk about with side the artists are from. I used the colour theme if Red, Black & White because they stand out more & is also the magazines main theme colours.

HERE IS THE FLAT PLAN:

Here is the flat plan for my magazine but I have made changes to the magazine layout to make it look more appealing to my audience and to make it look similar to the case study magazine XXL. But in my final contents page I have reversed the colour scheme.

Front Cover Drafts

Front Cover Draft

Here is my draft of my front cover magazine, but with this draft I have used the photo that I had used in my DPS for a quick construction of the front cover. In this draft my magazine masthead is behind my model because this shows that my artist is more superior. This is because he is making an impact and a buzz in the music industry. Also, under where it says "M.A.T.S"  on the magazine, I also have the abbreviation so that people who are new to reading the magazine will know what it stands for

Contents Page Drafts

Contents Page Draft

1st Draft with found images

This is my contents page draft that i have constructed and drafted with two found images of two big artists from the U.K and USA, Chip & Chief Keef. Below is where i got the idea from to construct this contents page draft because i liked the layout and it the magazine XXL fit in the genre that I am currently doing. On my contents page draft i got the idea of the features section of the XXL contents page and applied it to mine and i also decided to use the colour scheme that was being used.

2nd Draft w/ taken images
On this contents page i experimented with red but the red couldn't be really seen, i had also applied clouds into the background of the image to give it a type of in space atmosphere and i had also tried to make the 'CONTENTS' headline stand out by adding the red as an outline of the contents page heading.

3rd Draft with found images

With this 3rd draft the heading seems to stand out more because of the background of the contents page. In addition, the writing for the contents page numbers and writing beside it isn't really viewable with the naked eye and is very hard to see what is being said on the page.

Final DPS

FINAL MAGAZINE DPS

Here is my new updated DPS:

This is my final DPS that I have constructed, I have changed the whole look and appearance of my magazine DPS. I decided to put my model on the left side of the magazine with the quote "I BRING THE INK TO THE GAME, I AM BLACK INK AND I'M THE BEST IN THE GAME". Also, the way that my model is positioned suggests that he is superior and unstoppable. On the right hand side of the magazine I decided to make the background black with the writing white so that they blend in nicely because black and white blend in very well. I also applied the stand first for my model to give an introduction for my artist "Black Ink". I got the inspiration for this DPS from the image below:

Black Ink. (Photograph taken by Dean Hugh - Johnson)

This is the photo I used for my final DPS, i chose this photo because it shows my magazine audience that he is still an underground artist trying to make a living from a council flat in UK to an artist who collaborates with big Rap artist in the UK and USA. So, i thought that the image is very effective because some people may be able to relate to his current position in the music scene. In the process of constructing the final DPS I rotated him so that his body position will be reflecting in the opposite way.
